All the news that's fit to print

That's the NYTimes slogan (and a good one too!) and it's repeated throughout the film Wordplay which Mike and I saw yesterday. The film was great and being an avid NYTimes reader and sometimes crossword solver (I only got as good as Wednesdays when I was doing them regularly), the film surpassed my expectations. I think you have to be a little on the dorky side to really get into the film, but obviously for me that was no problem.

There are really only two other bits of news to report here. The first is an embarrassing moment I had the other day. I was getting on the up elevator at Equinox the other morning while listening to my iPod. Most of the time, people aren't in the elevator when it hits Equinox since it's the lowest level. I get on (going up to the third floor to get coffee at Bouchon Bakery...soooo good...) and "I want you back" by the Jackson 5 comes on my iPod. So of course I start dancing in the elevator. I mean dancing the way you dance at home...when you are in your underpants, with full high pitched signing. You know what I am talking about. It's your secret I-know-I look-foolish-Where's-my-fake mic?-dance.

But of course I wasn't alone. Standing in the somewhat dark elevator corner is a man, about my age, laughing so hard that he could barely get the words out..."You really have some moves there..." I was stunned. So in a stammering voice I say, "it's...the...Jackson5...my...motown...hits..." All I could think was that I wanted to punch him in the face and run out of the elevator. I am not a shy person, but this really was embarrassing...he saw my most secret dance moves! It's like being naked!

He tells me that its nice to see people that happy in the morning. Then he tells me as he leaves that my dance moves were cute. Mortifying.

Now, the last most important recent development is that we are moving...again. This time to the UWS (Westside 4ever [followed by gang sign]), W70th to be precise. The area is great as it is right by Central Park, two locations of our gym, the A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 trains, and more importantly, Sido and Fairway. The apt is smaller than our current one which means we have to get rid of more stuff, but the backyard makes it all worth it. I can garden tomatoes and herbs, have my coffee at my patio table, drink beer while sitting in a kiddie pool and most of all, get a slip and slide for the first time ever. Ok, well Mike says I can't get a slip and slide since it will result in serious bodily damage but I think it's worth a try. Bodies heal and I really want a slip and slide.

If you're really curious about the apt, check out Mike's site. He has this "to scale" layout of the apt we made yesterday. And don't be scared of the "metal cage." It's the locked metal fence/gate that is put up to separate out backdoor from the yard to keep perpetrators out I suppose. That's where we plan to put our bikes and Vijay. We are suuuper excited.

  • Is this comment a formality, since we are IMing right now? And I have IMed you of my excitement do to your proximity to "my" apartment (ie, my sis's palce)? Hmmm.

  • - It will be more like the "dive and crash" than "slip and slide."

    - Vijay will definitely be kept in the cage. (with any rabid monkeys we may have at that time)

  • Slip and slide crocodile mile! It's so fun, seriously Captain Safety (oops, I mean Mike). As for the cage, it seems like an excellent way to threaten misbehaving guests. "What? You don't like my cooking? Get in the cage!"

  • Bad little girls named Katherine go in the metal cage. Maybe I will put the compost bin in the metal cage when people are being extra bad and see how hungry they get. Starvation or compost....

Better yet, I will plant stinging nettles (wearing a protective suit of course...my last experience with such painful plants taught me a lesson) and throw individuals I think are being poopy in there and watch them writhe with pain.

Ha! This backyard is going to be awesome.

  • i will not stand for a cagemate.

  • Feces throwing is a punishable crime in the Kim-Halas house. I will have to enter the cage with a hot poking stick...poor vijay.

I don't like it when feces gets in the way...like the time I tried to make it to a 5k in central parck and missed it because the train was delayed due to someone making a feces pile on the train.

  • If you ever want some extra income, rent the backyard to a poor wash. heights grad student who'd like to be closer to civilization and is willing to camp out. It's the summer after all.

  • please, for the love of little baby jesus, do not plant vegetables in your backyard and eat them. rats and pigeons will live in your backyard and disease everything they touch. do you really want to eat syphillis-infected tomatoes? i didn't think so.

  • Pigeons may have VDs (something I have been convinced of for a long time now) but I will plant vegetables nonetheless. If I can prove that pigeons do in fact spread STDs then can you imagine the get-rid-of pigeons campaign I can start? This would be a huge public service and those that are found FEEDING pigeons or making little makeshift homes for them will be found endagering human lives and will be appropriately made to pay.

But don't worry, I will send my harvest to be tested for STDs. How funny would it be if I showed up at the health center with a basket of vegetables?
