Go ahead, covet my soon-to-be backyard.
It wasn't very hard to come to the decision that down-sizing on interior living space would be worth the addition of our own private garden (in the future complete with slip and slide) but apparently this is something of a real esate trend in NYC.

backyards are pointless in nyc. central park is the best backyard a city person* could hope for.
*by 'city person' i mean some unfortunate soul stuck on a dinky island with >8 million wretches.

i just realized that inadvertantly i was putting you and mike down. my apologies.
as much as i would love a backyard, i somehow feel that for me personally it is moot. perhaps i would be enjoying my nyc experience more if i had a backyard. perhaps not.
either way, i look forward to seeing your backyard, although i suspect i will be relegated to the cage for my comments. ;)

Backyards are NEVER pointless. I mean, you would say a terrace is pointless? That is even dinkier than a backyard and they are fant-abulous. [Of course I feel very strongly about terraces since I grew up with a great one on the 24th floor FACING the NYC skyline...really, not much else beats that...maybe a terrace facing Mt. Rainer.]
Anyway, my point is the backyard, however small, is a special retreat from your little box where you can sit in your underwear and enjoy a cold beer...and occassionally be squirted with a hose. It's beautiful. And it has garden gnomes. You can help me fix the backyard since you have great landscaping skills.
Oh yeah, and considering our new address, it's like CP IS our backyard. Poopers to you! :)
